Chris Ellis, 1950 to 2019
It is with great sadness that we report the death after a long battle with cancer of Chris Ellis, who provided the brilliant lighting design for the 2013 Chester Mystery Plays. We were incredibly lucky to have Chris as part of the team as he had been one of the world's leading lighting designers for more than 40 years. When he joined the team, he said it had been his ambition for many years to light a Mystery Cycle and he gave us something beyond our wildest dreams. His experience of lighting architectural spaces stood him in good stead as he created a design which flowed seamlessly from Judith Croft's set design to the medieval columns and roof of the cathedral itself. It was our production manager, Peter Herbert, who brought him into the team, having worked with him a number of times before, and personally I was delighted to reacquaint myself with him having been in Youth Theatre shows he lit in Leicester back in the 1970s. His work was astonishing and I feel very privileged to have worked with him and seen many of his extraordinary creations over the years. Most importantly he was a lovely man, dedicated to his friends and family and a great member of the Chester Mystery Plays extended family. He will be very much missed by everyone who knew him.
