Noah's Flood

Chester Mystery Plays in Miniature

2012

Musical and artistic direction: Matt Baker
Designer:
Tony Lewery
Conductor:
Erin Elston
Film:
The Harlequin Project, University of Chester

Performed as part of MBNA Chestival 2012, Noah’s Flood was seen by around 2,000 people. The weather was a little unkind for this third production in the Chester Mystery Plays in Miniature series – although the threatened deluge didn’t actually interrupt performances, the cold and wet weather was extremely unseasonal!

Around 120 people performed this hugely popular musical version of the story of Noah and the Ark. Community performers were joined by children and young people from Jigsaw Music Theatre and pupils from St Werburgh’s and St Columba’s Catholic Primary School – all under the watchful eye of God (played by Akshay Gulati) who appeared on the MBNA Chestival Big Screen. The University of Chester’s Harlequin Project again provided creative and evocative film.

Noah’s Flood was a perfect curtain raiser for the 2013 main production!

This spectacular and triumphant production was enthusiastically received by audiences and critically acclaimed in the press. It involved over 500 members of local communities who volunteered their services as performers, technical/stage management support, front of house and bar staff, chaperones and marketing and administrative teams. It was seen by over 12,500 people, and a further 3,000 watched street theatre performances.

A concert version of the production was performed in the nave of Liverpool Cathedral on 10 and 11 October 2008. This was the first time the plays had been taken outside of Chester by the community company. The production was Chester’s contribution to Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture.
