The Chester Mystery Plays are an amazing community effort, but the production team is led by theatre professionals who bring a wealth of skill and experience to what is a world-renowned and critically acclaimed spectacle in an incredible historic space. PRODUCTION MANAGER

Production Manager

With special skills / experience: A Production Manager to deliver the 2023 Production of the Chester Mystery Plays in Chester Cathedral (June/July 2023).

Fee: £10000

The Job:
The Production Manager is an ambassador for the Chester Mystery Plays and for Chester Mystery Plays Ltd, supports the Artistic Director for the 2023 Cycle of the Plays and leads on the development and creation of all aspects of production management, ensuring that work of a consistently high quality is produced. The Production Manager will work closely with the Artistic Director and Project Manager and other members of the production team.
Production Manager
The key responsibilities of the Production Manager are as follows:

  • Undertake the project with reasonable care and skill, including taking account of any special requirements within the nave of Chester Cathedral or restrictions that may be imposed
  • To work with the Artistic Director and production team to complement and enhance the directorial concepts of the plays, conveying the key images and themes from textual interpretation
  • To develop and manage the production schedule
  • To ensure that all designs are delivered within agreed timescales
  • To oversee all aspects of the seating stand, set, sound, lighting and set build for the 2023 production of the Chester Mystery Plays in the Nave of Chester Cathedral, ensuring that all work complies with the Cathedral’s terms of hire and Memorandum of Understanding, and with the requirements of other relevant bodies eg Fabric Advisory Committee
  • Oversee the production budget, ensuring that all members of the production team work within the agreed budgets, maintaining close contact with the Project Manager
  • Source equipment as required eg lighting, film projection (note that the Sound Designer is responsible for sourcing sound equipment within agreed budgets)
  • Ensure that detailed method statements are produced for consideration by the Cathedral and appropriate external bodies eg the Fabric Advisory Committee by 2 January 2023
  • Call and be available to attend production meetings
  • Schedule and manage the fit-up, technical and dress rehearsals up to and including the first public performance
  • To be available to “trouble shoot” during the run as required
  • Schedule and manage the de-rigging/get-out process
  • To act as line manager to the stage manager
  • Lead, supervise and train volunteers working on the project as appropriate
  • In association with the Project Manager, to ensure that the company operates within agreed policies eg health and safety, child protection
  • Support the development and implementation of marketing activity eg undertaking interviews (this will include development and production of short films in association with the Artistic Director)
  • Attend meetings of and report to the Board or any other sub-committee of the Board as requested
  • Work closely and communicate regularly with the Artistic Director and Project Manager
  • Present a written report to the Chairman by the end of August 2023 to provide feedback and assist in planning for future productions
  • Undertake such appropriate duties which may from time to time be allocated by the Board


Period of contract
The contract will run from the date of appointment to 23 July 2023. Key dates are:
  • Public launch: 6 October 2022
  • Auditions: October/November 2022
  • Rehearsals: from early January 2023
  • Work on site: from 12 June 2023
  • Performances: 28 June – 15 July 2023 (to include two previews)
  • Exit Cathedral by 22 July 2023

STAGE MANAGER

Stage Manager

With special skills / experience: An experienced Stage Manager to ensure the smooth delivery of the 2023 Chester Mystery Plays.

Fee: £3500

The Job: The Stage Manager is an ambassador for the Chester Mystery Plays and for Chester Mystery Plays Ltd. They are responsible for ensuring the smooth running of rehearsals, working closely with the Artistic Director.

The Stage Manager will also work closely with other members of the Production team, particularly the Production and Project Managers.
Stage Manager
The key responsibilities of the Stage Manager are as follows:
  • Communicate with the cast regarding call times and other information required
  • Call and record production meetings
  • Produce and communicate rehearsal notes and report to all production team members in a timely and effective manner
  • Help train and assist a volunteer DSM in creating and maintaining 'the book'
  • Prepare and communicate call times and associated rosters to cast members
  • Have an oversight of prop making/procurement
  • To support the Production Manager in running technical and dress rehearsals, with a view to ensuring that the production runs smoothly
  • During all technical and dress rehearsals and performances, cue lighting/sound/special effects
  • To support the Production Manager in ensuring that the set is correctly set up for performances both onstage and backstage
  • Lead, supervise and train volunteers working on the project as appropriate
  • Coordination of a post-production meeting to facilitate feedback and assist in planning for future productions
  • Work within and ensure general adherence to agreed relevant Chester Mystery Plays Ltd policies eg Health and Safety
  • Undertake such appropriate duties which may from time to time be allocated by the Board

SOUND DESIGNER

Sound Designer

With special skills / experience: A Sound Designer to work with the Director and creative team to create the site-specific soundscape for the 2023 Chester Mystery Plays.

Fee: £3000

The Job: The Sound Designer is an ambassador for the Chester Mystery Plays and for Chester Mystery Plays Ltd, they support the Artistic Director and Production Manager in providing artistic vision and leadership for the 2023 Cycle of the Plays and leads on the development and creation of all aspects of Sound Design, ensuring that work of a consistently high quality is produced.

The Sound Designer will work closely with the Artistic Director, Set/Costume Designer, Production Manager and Lighting Designer in addition to other members of the production team.
Sound Designer
The key responsibilities of the Sound Designer are as follows:

  • To create and realise Sound Design Plans in line with the Artistic Director’s creative vision, appropriate for the site-specific nature of the nave setting in Chester Cathedral, undertaking the project with reasonable care and skill
  • To source quotations, liaise with hire companies and source equipment and SFX as required by the Production Manager. Working in line with the budget allocation provided by the Production Manager inclusive of VAT
  • To work closely with the Production Manager to deliver the project in line with production deadlines and on budget.
  • To attend any meetings that are required to perform this duty
  • To be in attendance during the technical/fit up period (and afterwards if required – to be confirmed with the Production Manager).
  • To undertake any other relevant duties that may be required to fulfil the legitimate function of the Sound Designer
